2008.03.14 – 2008.03.21 “Las Fallas" Who's Who-Dave & Lowie Bock, Nancy Chapman, Jeffrey Cheske, Judi Graser, Evelyn Layton, Juan Waelder; plus, Christine Bauman
Location: SPAIN: Valencia
Bribery works!!! Last August 2007 when MOANA KUEWA cruised into Valencia, Spain (one week after the 32nd America’s Cup); Chris became intrigued with the “Las Fallas” concept (however she did not understand how far-reaching and important this fiesta is to the people of Valencia). Her idea was to immerse herself into a cultural event to experience something truly Spanish (personally) and share this experience with as many family and friends as possible. Therefore, she purchased a custom gown from the specialty shop of ALBAES ROBA TRADICIONAL (Quevedo 6, 4601 Valencia) and reserved three-two bedroom suites with a fold-out couch at “40 Flats.” With each flat being able to accommodate six people, 18 individuals would have been comfortable.
Having the “plan” put in place, Chris invited the 289 people she sends holiday cards to in December and kept her “finger’s crossed.” Many responded and tried to join her, however there were a total of eight to fill the three suites (everyone had a bed in a bedroom). WHAT A FUN GROUP! Here is a little story about each participant:
DAVE AND LOWIE BOCK own SALTY DAWG, a Nordhavn Model 55, Hull #4 (Chris owns MOANA KUEWA, a Nordhavn 55, Hull #11). Chris met Dave and Lowie for the first time last May during preparations for the Med Bound 2007 Rally of Nordhavns that were going to cross the Atlantic Ocean together from 2007.05.28 to 2007.07.10. Friendship grew during the 0200 hr watches (via the on-board radio) while underway and the multitude of social gatherings in Fort Lauderdale, FL; Bermuda; Azores; and Gibraltar.
NANCY CHAPMAN and JUDI GRASER lived in Alexandria, Virginia a few blocks away from each other. They were mothers of young children that took turns driving to support a “car pool” to shuttle their children to and from school. From this, they became close friends for over thirty-five years. In 1988, Chris befriended Judi ,and through Judi ,met Nancy. The three have been close friends ever since supporting each other through the “best of times” and the “worst of times.”
JEFFREY CHESKE is Chris’ youngest brother. He is a specialty parts design and manufacturing engineer. He has extensive “hands-on” experience in mechanical systems similar to those on MOANA KUEWA after owning two businesses that designed, manufactured, and tested precision parts for the Space Shuttle to Harley Davidson Motorcycles. After having to close the doors on his business because of foreign competition, Jeff agreed to join Chris on her world-wide cruising adventure as MOANA KUEWA’S 1st Mate/Chief Engineer in January 2008.
EVELYN LAYTON has know Chris since working together for the Defense Acquisition University. Evelyn was in charge of course curriculum and Chris was a professor and member of course design team. This creative environment gave them the ability to “let their dynamics flow.” This resulted in a nineteen-year friendship.
JUAN WAELDER met Chris and Sonaia (co-owner of GOLEEN, Nordhavn 57 based in Alcudia, Mallorca) at an art exhibit opening at the Gothic Castell de Bellvere in the city of Palma, on the Spanish Island of Mallorca. He was the professional photographer for a popular magazine “Finest” covering the event. Friendship has grown between the three. He, and his family, were planning on joining “Las Fallas.” Last minute family demands only allowed Juan to join the “Fallas” group for a few days.
A SPECTACULAR TIME WAS ENJOYED BY ALL!!! Please go to the “Christine, Crew, and Friends Travel” and “Pictures” within this web site for things seen and done.
