Fellow Americans have a propensity to gravitate to each other while in a foreign land. This was the case in the latter days of MOANA KUEWA’s days at the Varadero Shipyard when John and Greg were invited for a cup of coffee. John participated in the Eastern Med Ralley in the past and was invited back for this 20th anneversary year. This was a personal invitation and there was some discussion about John coming onboard MOANA KUEWA with his daughter so MOANA KUEWA may qualify to participate the spring/summer 2009 (it is not closed to everyone except past participants). Besides a wave “good-bye”, this brief discussion was the only contact between the two boats.

During Jeff’s and Chris’ extended stay at the Hotel Zenith (while MOANA KUEWA was “hauled-out”) & Jim Winter’s visit, they discovered the “Rocking Shadows” band that played in a nightclub in the basement of the hotel. Although the band did not start officially playing until July, the band allowed Chris and Jeff exclusive audience rights during their practice sessions on Tuesday and Saturday nights as the 60s and 70 music filled the air and inspired a lot of dancing. The “Rocking Shadows” even allowed Chris to invite Juan, Gina, and Teo for an evening of fun. Plus, Mar invited Jeff & Chris to her costume birthday party. During dinner on MOANA KUEWA, Ignacio said we have a new set of friends in Palma and are welcome back at any time.

Participants: Jim Winter (on the right)

Oops…did not get a picture of Jim on MOANA KUEWA. However he did visit, plus he was able to see our friend Sonaia’s Nordhavn 57, GOLEEN in Alcudiamar. Jim and Chris worked together at the Defense Systems Management College when both of them were on active duty and were professors teaching Department of Defense acquisition courses to all ranks of officers, enlisted, and civilians in all services (Air Force, Army, Navy & Marines). As a special project, there was a team of six officers assigned the additional duty of distilling acquisition into its essence then creating a comprehensive course that could be taught to Generals through Privates (Acquisition Course 101). The team was headed by Andrea Carey. Out of the six team members, three of us have remained good friends – Andrea, Jim, and Chris. Jim has since retired from the Navy and is living in Perth, Australia. However, he is an international consultant to the gas & oil companies. Therefore, his travels brought him to Eastern Europe. This was close enough for him to take many connecting flights to visit Chris in Palma. Jeff, Jim, and Chris had a fabulous time touring the beautiful island of Mallorca, discovering the “Rocking Shadows” band, and partying.

Participants: Mark & Brooke Phelps with new baby girl, India

New Zealander’s Mark & Brooke were onboard a beautiful catamaran, Beĺmare, wintered down the dock from MOANA KUEWA in Barcelona’s Port Forum Marina. They became mutual friends of Bernie & June Francis, Chris, and later Jeff. There lives changed a lot when they decided to “put down temporary roots” in Mallorca for India’s birth and Brooke’s recovery after a C-section. For many years, Mark was with Chris providing recommendations on achorages and cruising plans. With his input, Bernie’s input, Sonaia’s input, and Phillip’s input, Chris developed the cruising plan for the summer. Their recommendations have been excellent. MOANA KUEWA definitely benefited from their past experiences. Thank you Mark!

Participants: Juan Waelder & Gina Vásquez

Cocktails on board MOANA KUEWA. Juan and Gina filled Jeff’s and Chris’ life with excitement, activities, and friendship throughout the time spent in Palma during the spring months of 2008. This is when Chris & Jeff met the rest of Juan’s family (during the extensive repair of MOANA KUEWA in Varadero Shipyard in Palma) and they shared their tremendous network of friends. They were the ultimate hosts, inviting Sonaia, Jeff, and Chris to all the special events in Mallorca. We will always consider them the best of friends.
