ITALY: Sicily Island Taomina

George Rizzo is the owner of the Taomina Yacht Hotel, a series of well secured buoys in Taomina Bay. MOANA KUEWA was at anchor next to this hotel and George generously offered to take Chris & Jeff’s niece, Marie Messina, and Chris on a personalized tour of Taomina coastline by tender. Marie was thrilled to go into caves and see the beauty of Taomina, Capo Taomina, Pinnacle Rock, Isola Bella, San Andrea Cove, and Mazzaro Rock. We were also able to enjoy a drink and dessert on boat M/Y INSPIRATION with a lovely couple, their children, and crew, before returning to MOANA KUEWA where later that evening George enjoyed some American beef steaks.

Nordhavn ho! George Rizzo, Marie Messina, and Chris were zipping along the Taomina coastline in a tender when low and behold on the horizen Chris spots M/Y SEABIRD, a Nordhavn 47. Seabird was close enough to the shoreline, and of course cruising slow enough, for the tender to catch up to it, & for Chris to extend the invitiation for SEABIRD to anchor near MOANA KUEWA in Taomina Bay. Linda and John are Americans. Chris and Jeff just finished purchasing some good old American beef steaks at Sigonella Naval Air Station. Jeff barbequed these rare delicacies for Linda & John, George, Marie, and Chris. It was lovely meeting other members of the Nordhavn community. SEABIRD is headed toward Turkey for the winter. Perhaps they will catch-up with our good friends, David & Lowie Bock, M/Y SALTY DAWG, who are planning on wintering for a second year in Turkey.

Ixtapa, Mexico

Participants: Paul & Kathy Geren

It’s a very small world. After a seven day, 1068 nm, cruise from Herzliya, Israel, to Catania, Italy; Paul was on the dock to greet us. Paul is now the Captain & Kathy is crew of M/Y SUNSET. However, in April/May 2007, he worked on the replacement of MOANA KUEWA’s John Deere 330 rear main engine seal at the American Custom Yacht facility while working for AMT, American Marine Tech. They have been in Catania for a while, so they shared two of their favorite dinner spots and joined us for a steak dinner on MOANA KUEWA one night. They were also kind enough to keep an eye on MOANA KUEWA while we made the short drive to Sigonella Navel Air Station to purchase American products, high speed internet access, and spent a night in an American environment. Fun.

TURKEY: Kemer Marina

Participants: Vedat Kardes

Vedat was hosting his cousin, Gökhan, in the resort town of Kemer when he met Chris & Jeff at the Roof Top Disco that overlooks the Kemer Marina. Everyone had such a good time dancing and talking that Chris & Jeff invited Vedat, Gökhan, and Ozkan to dinner on MOANA KUEWA two nights later. Vedat is a professional translater that speaks/writes Turkish, German, & English. He worked with Ozkan at one of the two hospitals in Kemer. Now, he has become good friends with Chris & Jeff. He participated in the Halloween Party in the marina – great fun. Vedat was flying out of Istanbul on 2008.11.08 to return to Germany to relieve his father of some of the responsibility for the three Turkish restaurants his family owns in Cologne, Germany. (His father had a heart attack in late October and was told he just needed to rest more.) Circumstanially, Jeff and Chris were planning on ending our tour in Istanbul the week before Chris was flying to the U.S.A. on 2008.11.12. Threrefore, Vedat was more than welcome to join us for our tour with the promise that we would get him to Istanbul in time for his flight. He added SO MUCH TO OUR TRIP! We were very lucky to have him help us when we had the accident on 2008.11.01. In addition, he was a wealth of information when touring Hierapolis, Pamukkale, and Ephesus. His laughter, enthusiasm, and light heart made the trip great fun! TO OUR GREATEST REGRET – VEDAT’S FATHER DIED OF A HEART ATTACK ON 2008.11.07. OUR GREATEST SYMPATHY TO VEDAT AND HIS FAMILY.

Ozkan is a friend of Zedat. They worked together at a hospital in Kemer. He met Chris & Jeff at the Roof Top Disco that overlooks the Kemer Marina. Everyone had such a good time dancing and talking that Chris & Jeff invited Gökhan, Vedat, and Ozkan to dinner on MOANA KUEWA two nights later.
