ITALY: Amalfi
Participants: Leonardo De Flaviis, Nicky, Chris, & Jeff
|
Two friends from Abruzzo, Italy, drove four hours from the east coast of Italy to Amalfi to join Jeff and Chris for barbequed ribs (while Chris held two umbrellas over Jeff’s head during a thunderstorm and torrential rain) and Jeff’s famous “high fuel” baked beans. Originally, Chris met these two wonderful people courtesy of her friend, Juan Waelder, during a CinquaCento VIP tour October 2007. Then in July 2008, Jeff and our boat guests from Hawaii, Don & Christine Clothier, took the same tour with Leonardo & Nicky. They spent the night on MOANA KUEWA which gave us ample opportunity to discuss world politics, consume Abruzzo & Tuscan wine, and enjoy a great deal of laughter.

ITALY: Amalfi
Participants: Kevin & Tina Cancel

If you look at the pictures in this Pictorial Guest Log for January 2007, you will see Chris’ life-long friends, Ray & Mary Cancel, who joined her on MOANA KUEWA through the Panama Canal January 19th, 2007. Yep, Kevin is one of their five children who is now in the process of having his first child. Unbelieveable how Chris is now very good friends with her friend’s CHILDREN! Tina has just started a 3-5 year job with the U.S. Navy in the financial department and they moved to Naples in August 2009. Kevin just left Cherokee Information Services, Inc. (the company that Chris was a V.P. before retiring). The sun was brightly shining on the magnificent town of Amalfi while Kevin, Tina, and Chris enjoyed the Cathedral, street scenes, and lemon ice. In addition, Kevin and Tina invited Jeff and Chris to join them for dinner at one of their favorite restarants in Naples. Then Kevin assisted with the chore of reprovisioning MOANA KUEWA with American goods from the U.S. Naval Supply Services Center. What a fabulous young couple.

ITALY: Rome
Participants: Marie Messina
|
ITALIAN TRIP INCLUDED: Island of Sicily: Catania, Roposto, Messina, Taomina, & the Strait of Messina; Aeolian Islands: Lipari, Salina, Panarea & Stromboli; West coast of mainland Italy: Amalfi, Tivoli, Radda dell Chianti, Florence, & Rome
Marie Messina is Jeff and Chris’ niece. She spent seventeen exciting days exploring Italy, by land and by sea. One of her first stops was the seaport city of Messina that lies at the northwest corner of the Strait of Messina. Her immigrant paternal grandparents were born and raised in this area. Messina underwent devistion due to earthquakes, tidal waves, and World War II. However, the proud people of Messina have reconstructed most of the key buildings and sites to their original grandeur. A real statement to their tanasity and perserverance. Highlights of the trip were exploring the Taomina coastline by tender, cruising through the Strait of Messina, a helecopter ride over the active volcano of Stromboli, a wine tasting tour of the Tuscany region, seeing Michelangelo’s famous statue “David” in Florence, culminating in a two-day tour of Rome. We miss her.

ITALY: Sicily Island Taomina
Participants: George Rizzo
|
George Rizzo is the owner of the Taomina Yacht Hotel, a series of well secured buoys in Taomina Bay. MOANA KUEWA was at anchor next to this hotel and George generously offered to take Chris & Jeff’s niece, Marie Messina, and Chris on a personalized tour of Taomina coastline by tender. Marie was thrilled to go into caves and see the beauty of Taomina, Capo Taomina, Pinnacle Rock, Isola Bella, San Andrea Cove, and Mazzaro Rock. We were also able to enjoy a drink and dessert on boat M/Y INSPIRATION with a lovely couple, their children, and crew, before returning to MOANA KUEWA where later that evening George enjoyed some American beef steaks.

Nordhavn ho! George Rizzo, Marie Messina, and Chris were zipping along the Taomina coastline in a tender when low and behold on the horizen Chris spots M/Y SEABIRD, a Nordhavn 47. Seabird was close enough to the shoreline, and of course cruising slow enough, for the tender to catch up to it, & for Chris to extend the invitiation for SEABIRD to anchor near MOANA KUEWA in Taomina Bay. Linda and John are Americans. Chris and Jeff just finished purchasing some good old American beef steaks at Sigonella Naval Air Station. Jeff barbequed these rare delicacies for Linda & John, George, Marie, and Chris. It was lovely meeting other members of the Nordhavn community. SEABIRD is headed toward Turkey for the winter. Perhaps they will catch-up with our good friends, David & Lowie Bock, M/Y SALTY DAWG, who are planning on wintering for a second year in Turkey.
